The charges of genocide against Saddam Hussein have been dropped.
I hope this puts to bed any extant claims that the rush-job of Saddam's execution was any kind of justice.
As I've intimated many times before, I had feelings for Saddam that at many points verged on respect and admiration, if only for his style and his defiance. The man was good at being an outlaw. But the fact that he also held together a virtually secular Iraq, shunned al-Qaeda, and preferred the Godfather II to the original; well, that made him dear to me.
But I don't, for one second, think he was innocent of genocide. I don't think the families of his victims, nor he himself, would prefer to see all of this merely thrown out. This whole circus has been a denial of history, no matter what your position on Saddam or Iraq.
