As Bob Costas put it, Shaun White won the gold with "the spirit of a rascal."
If I could see just one athlete like The Flying Tomato every four years, I would be satisfied. I'm a light to moderate sport fan, but at a time like this I find myself feeling what has come to be all too rare in these days of mega-professional sport: real enthusiasm.
A part of me feels a little sad that the most meaningful event ever to befall this young man (and he just seems so young, I mean, I was watching the Olympics before he was even born) has occurred so early in his life; but that feeling he has right now must be pure magic.
A feeling that is quite the opposte of what Michelle Kwan must currently be feeling, despite having accomplished more than the two next best skaters combined.
Michelle Kwan - 1980-2006
No, she's not really dead, but to hear the commentators talk about it, you'd think she was.
Michelle Kwan will not likely pursue Olympic gold in 2010. Already ancient at 25, Kwan will be nearly 30 years old before she gets another chance, and no sane skater would make another attempt from inside such senescence. But Kwan is no sane skater. Twice medalled, five-time World Champion, nine-time National Champion, if anyone could pull it off, it's Kwan.
So Michelle, if you are listening, my ambassador of Kwan, I vow to attend the next Winter Olympics on the condition that you are in them.
KWAN TAKES GOLD IN 2010!
