The S.O. experts (left to right): life coach Iyanla, Dr. Stan (who,
Starting Over, everyone's favorite daytime reality soap, has pushed television boundaries yet again. In today's episode, they took one of the housemates to court so that she may, as life-coach Iyanla puts it, "fight for her life."
Housemate Jill, the show's sassy, outspoken woman of color (and this girl's favorite) stood trial and defended herself against the charge of "conspiring to live an unfulfilled life." With Iyanla as her defense lawyer and Della Reese as the presiding judge, Jill presented her progress in the house in an attempt to prove she could graduate and "start over" in the real world.
The trial was perhaps the most dramatic thing to air on television since Dallas' landmark "Who Shot J.R.?" episode. Emotions ran high, as did the cheese factor, and there was more than a little overacting. Nonetheless, it wasn't just amazing--it was courtroom drama amazing. It was Law and Order amazing...
Ultimately, Jill was sentenced to graduate upon completion of three final acts: 1) contact her estranged father, 2) find a new job, and 3) allow for the possibility of a man in her life. Undoubtedly frustrated with having to remain in the S.O. house with the chatterbox Kim, she shed a few tears. But then, like every good court show, the gallery stood up, broke out in a inspirational song, and dried her tears. It was To Kill a Mockingbird meets Cop Rock meets Oxygen network meets therapy. And I loved it, 100%.
But for those of you who don't give a damn about this episode synopsis, shove off. Or, better yet, tune into the program. It truly is amazing. Chances are you will laugh; you might even cry. At the very least, watching Iyanla work her magic will restore your belief in human goodness; a hug from her has the restorative powers to heal you...
